Non-Profits Lining Up To Get Donation From Michael Jordan After $8.9 Million Jury Award
(CBS) -- Minutes after a federal jury awarded Michael Jordan $8.9 million in an advertising case against Dominick's, he said the money would be going to charity.
That caught the attention of the non-profit world here in Chicago and the requests have been pouring in ever since. So far, more than a dozen non-profits want part of the award. CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker takes a look at one such plea.
Anthony Moseley, artistic director at Collaboraction Theatre is wasting no time asking MJ to donate some of the money to his non-profit. He says as soon as he heard the news he went searching to see if Jordan had already committed the money.
He says Jordan should donate to the group, "Because we're unique."
Moseley's charity Collaboraction is a community organization that uses dance, art, food and what he calls crime theatre to address violence in Chicago.
"The teens through writing and acting, they see themselves not just as less likely to be violent, but being now responsible to be a peace leader among their peers," Moseley.
The group performs in park districts on the South and West sides of the city. They were at Austin Town Hall last week. Eight-year-old Jalen Jackson was there.
"It taught me how to be by myself," Jalen said. "How to care for others and don't be on the streets a lot."
Collaboraction plans to ask Jordan for $700,000, money to hire more staff, actors, and take the productions into city high schools.
"I think he should give Collaboraction the money," Jalen said.
Jordan's spokeswoman says they're collecting all the requests and putting them into folder. They'll review them when Jordan actually get the money, and that could take a while.
Dominick's attorneys are expected to appeal the case, so none of the charities should expect any cash this year.
