Bitterly cold temperatures with minor snowfall on the way Thursday in Chicago

Snow showers late Thursday, very cold late this week in Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) — The first night of the new year will be cold.

Temperatures overnight drop in the lower 20s, but with gusty westerly winds near 25 mph, wind chill values will sink as low as the teens tonight.

Mostly gray skies are in order Wednesday night also, and they will greet us in Chicago Thursday morning.

By Thursday afternoon, snow will start to arrive. The snow is expected to favor areas south of I-80, with a dusting up to 2" being possible for the higher end. Roads will be wet and slick starting Thursday evening, so make sure to plan accordingly.

On top of the snow, temperatures will be near freezing during the afternoon, but feels-like temperatures will be in the lower 20s.

Behind Thursday's weather system, cold artic air remains for the beginning days in January.  

Another shot of snow returns to the forecast Sunday into Monday.

Thursday: Cold start, afternoon snow. High of 32. Minor amounts in the city, 1 to 2" south of I-80.
