New six-story parking garage coming to O'Hare International Airport
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) will break ground on a new parking garage at O'Hare International Airport.
The new six-story garage will more than double the amount of available parking for Terminal 5 for domestic and international passengers.
It's part of a $1 billion facelift for the terminal that will replace the current surface parking lot – providing a mix of short and long-term parking options through its expanded capacity.
The garage is one of four projects happening at the airport.
"These construction projects admittedly create disruptions to airport operations, but they are essential to providing safe, secure, and passenger-friendly facilities well in the future," said CDA Commissioner Jamie L. Rhee. "Investment in our airports creates jobs, business opportunities, and economic development in addition to future benefits for those traveling through our airports."
Other planned improvements include re-striping of the airport's roadways, expanding the curbside area, and parking assist technology and charging stations for electric vehicles.
The garage is scheduled to be complete by 2024.
