New Chicago Riverwalk Segment Open -- Sort Of

(CBS) -- The city proudly showed off a new segment of its Chicago Riverwalk last week.

The south bank section from Clark to State is now officially open, but what exactly does "open" mean?

CBS's Marissa Bailey reports.

The riverwalk is no doubt a wonderful addition to the Chicago River and The Loop. But if you haven't been down there yet, there's empty space.

Visitors say they were a bit surprised by some of the empty spaces.

It's hard to miss the rows of empty storefronts. Names on the doors, but no one is home.

"It's a neat place. It's nice concrete. But there's no stores or there's nothing open other than just walking through," says lifelong Chicagoan Roshan Parikh.

"I came down here, and I wondered where can I get a glass of wine? But really there is nowhere, so I was kind of disappointed," Jessica Altieri says.

No hard date has been given for the business openings.

Then there's a signage issue. The riverwalk portion between Clark and LaSalle is still closed, but there are no signs saying so. People walk around the corner, only to hit a dead end.

City officials could not be reached for comment Monday. Work continues on the riverwalk throughout the summer.
