Pregnant Woman Among Two Shot In Back Of The Yards
(CBS) – A 23-year-old pregnant woman was one of two people shot in the Back of the Yards neighborhood Monday afternoon, neighbors tell CBS 2 at the scene of the shooting.
Police say the woman was shot in the stomach and taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital after someone approached her and a companion in the 900 block of West 53rd Street and began firing. The suspect fled down a gangway. Also hit was a man, 25, who was shot in the back and also taken to Stroger, police said.
The incident occurred around 3:20 p.m.
Neighbors at the scene tell CBS 2 the female victim was pregnant and near her due date. She was identified as Crystal Myers.
"It was like fireworks," says Norma Diaz, who knows both shooting victims.
Crisis responder Andrew Holmes says Monday's shooting may have been retaliatory to a shooting that occurred a day earlier. Police could not confirm that. The male victim is a documented gang member, authorities said.
