Natural Gas Main Break In Elk Grove Village Forces Home Evacuations

CHICAGO (CBS) -- People were evacuated from their homes in Elk Grove Village Friday afternoon due to a natural gas main break, Village officials say.

The Elk Grove Village Fire Department has responded to a "significant" natural gas main break on Essex Road just west of Carlisle Avenue.

Village officials say a water main break caused the gas leak. The gas leak was stopped around 6 p.m. The water main is expected to be fixed Friday night, and residents were allowed back in their homes.

Neighbors and businesses to the imeediate east of the neighborhood noticed a strong smell of natural gas, according to the Village.

Traffic was diverted from the area while crews worked to fix the problem.
