National Weather Service Confirms Two Brief Tornadoes Hit Monday Evening
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The National Weather Service has dispatched damage assessment teams to survey the widespread damage from Monday's powerful storms, which they say was caused by two brief. tornadoes.
The NWS confirms two brief EF-1 tornadoes occurred Monday evening, with one near the town of Earlville and the second in Plainfield.
Straight-line winds were measured at speeds of up to 85 mph in some southern suburbs. Two National Weather Service survey teams will be out to assess damage across the region on Tuesday.
"We have a pretty good degree of skill at determining how strong the winds are that caused the damage. Probably one of the more difficult things to determine is when you have fast-moving, brief tornados," said senior meteorologist Gino Izzi. "Trying to pinpoint areas where it was tornadic damage versus straight-line winds, that's kind of … looking for a needle in a haystack, especially when we have a lot of straight-line wind damage mixed in with little pockets of small tornado damage."

Survey teams assesed storm damage in the Earlville area of LaSalle County, the Morris area in Grundy County, the Plainfield area in Will County, the Grant Park area in Kankakee County, and southern Lake and Porter counties in northwest Indiana.
