Museums To Create "Pop-Up" Displays Of Artwork
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Art Institute of Chicago and other museums will take some of their masterpieces to the streets.
WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports it's a project modeled on one in Britain. Reproductions of some 50 of America's masterworks will pop up on as many as 50,000 outdoor displays nationwide, in what's called Art Everywhere U.S., billed as the largest outdoor art show ever.
The iconic images will be seen on billboards, in subways, on trains and buses, and on bus shelters.
The project throws in a reality TV aspect; starting Monday and for the next month, Americans can vote on which of 100 iconic artworks they'd like to see displayed - paintings like the Art Institute's "American Gothic" by Grant Wood or Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks."
They'll go on display for four weeks, starting August 4th. Art Institute president Douglas Druick said he hopes the free displays will inspire more people to visit museums to see the originals.
