Mount Greenwood Street Dedicated To 12-Year-Old Cancer Patient Emily Beazley

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A street in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood was dedicated Friday afternoon to a 12-year-old girl who has battled cancer for a third of her life.

Everywhere you look on the 10700 block of South Homan Avenue, green and purple ribbons emblazon trees, light poles, fences, and homes.

The community has come together for Emily Beazley, who has been undergoing four years of treatment for non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Doctors sent her home this week, and cancelled her treatment, saying her chemotherapy wasn't working anymore, and there was nothing more they could do.

Even so, Emily is determined to continue fighting, and the neighborhood is rallying around her.

A neighbor, Pam, was dropping her kids off at Mount Greenwood Elementary School on Friday, where kids were dressed in purple and green. Purple is Emily's favorite color.

"This has been an ongoing thing for the Beazleys, and Emily, so I think it's great," Pam said. "The people behind Emily's Entourage are really doing a good job, so I think that's great."

She said Mount Greenwood is a community where people look out for each other.

"It really is. It's a lot of teachers, and firefighters, and policemen," she said.

Friday afternoon, the 10700 block of South Homan Avenue will be dedicated as Honorary Emily Beazley Avenue.

Her mother, Nadia, said it's an amazing tribute to a one-in-a-million child.
