Mount Greenwood Residents Put Up Blue Ribbons To Show Support For Police
CHICAGO (CBS) -- All across the country, police officers have found themselves under attack. One Chicago woman is taking it upon herself to stop the hate.
Blue ribbons have been tied along light poles and street signs in Mount Greenwood to support Chicago police officers.
CBS 2's Marissa Bailey reports a quick drive down 111th street near Pulaski and you notice the blue ribbons, one after the other.
Patricia Mueller and a neighbor starting hanging the ribbons on the street where she lives.
"We bought some blue table cloth at Party City and cut it up and tied it to the trees, then we posted on Facebook if anyone wanted to come help us," Mueller said.
About 10 people showed up to canvas 111th Street, including the wife of a Chicago police officer killed in the line of duty 16 years ago.
Supporters say they want their local officers to know that neighbors may not always say it, but they're thankful for the men and women who put themselves in harm's way every day.
Valerie Dangles's husband is a Chicago police officer and she says in good times or bad, police officers need support from the community they live in.
"There's so much negativity towards police officers," said Dangle. "It hits home, having my husband as a police officer. He's been on the job 20 years."
A quiet yet visible show of blue support for the men and women in blue.
The blue ribbons are showing up all over Mount Greenwood and are expanding to other neighborhoods as well.
