Mother Pleads For Violence To Stop As 4-Year-Old Daughter Recovers From Shooting
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The mother of a four-year-old shot this weekend in the West Englewood neighborhood is grateful for her daughter's recovery and baffled by the violence that nearly took her young life, reports WBBM's Nancy Harty.
Trennetta Gresham moved away from Chicago seven years and is preparing to do so again - this time with her daughter Jacele in need of physical therapy after she was shot in the head Friday night.
Doctors at Comer Children's Hospital say Jacele is making great progress after a 40 minute surgery late Friday night but she still has bullet fragments in her brain and may have lingering issues with her right side.
Jacele has moved out of the ICU and is able to eat, talk and walk with some assistance.
Her mother says she complains about the hospital food being "nasty".
Gresham spoke stoically to reporters at Comer about how she remained calm as people all around her were freaking out after her daughter and 17-year-old nephew Friday night after they went for a ride while the family was at a pre-prom party.
But the 29-year-old mother began to tear up as she implored those responsible for the shooting to come forward.
"Please, all my young, black men, because they're the ones that's doing most of the killing, please, please, please, please stop because I could be burying my daughter today."
Community Activist Andrew Holmes says there is an $11,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.
He says he and others will be handing out flyers at 69th and Ashland at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
