Most Lake Michigan Beaches Reopen To Swimmers

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A day after swimming was banned at most beaches on Lake Michigan in Chicago, due to high bacteria levels, the Chicago Park District has lifted swimming restrictions at all but two.

A Swim ban is in place at Oak Street Beach with swim advisories in place at Foster Beach and Humboldt Beach. All of the other lakefront beaches had no swimming restrictions, according to the Park District.

Swimming was banned at all of the lakefront beaches on Tuesday, after officials opened the locks separating the lake from the Chicago River system, dumping a mix of raw sewage and storm runoff into Lake Michigan. That sent bacteria levels soaring along the lakefront, but water quality tests taken later Tuesday showed safe levels at every beach but Montrose and South Shore.
