Parents in Berwyn demanding answers after gun recovered at Morton West High School

BERWYN, Ill. (CBS) -- Morton West High School in Berwyn was put on lockdown Friday after a handgun was recovered from a student Friday.

The student did not make any threat, and the gun was recovered without incident, according to Morton High School District 201 Supt. Dr. Tim Truesdale.

But the school was placed on soft lockdown, and the bell schedule for the day was altered as a result.

The Berwyn Police Department is investigating.

Parents say they are coming back Monday morning demanding answers.

A video circulating online shows tense moments as parents picked up their kids from the school. The video was initially posted on TikTok.

Parents can be heard yelling at what appear to be police officers and staff. Some of them yelling about the lack of metal detectors.

That led up to even more tense moments.

At one point a parent falls back trying to get through an entrance being blocked by an officer.

That's when a number of parents began cursing through the glass at officers. School officials can be seen trying to deescalate the situation as parents yelled that they don't feel their students are safe.

In that moment school officials could be heard telling parents they have SRO's and they are handling things as they should be.

Some parents have reached out to CBS 2 saying they plan to show up at the school again Monday morning following Friday's confrontation with school officials.

They say the school isn't being honest and will be back here demanding answers.
