Morton East High School Lockdown Lifted, No Danger Found
CHICAGO (CBS)-- Morton East High School in west suburban Cicero was locked down for about two hours Tuesday, after a student reported someone told her they were carrying a gun, but police later determined there was no threat.
School officials and Cicero police confirmed the school was placed on a precautionary lockdown around 10:30 a.m. Police said a student reported another person told her he was carrying an automatic weapon.
Police said a search of the building determined the report of a student carrying a weapon was not true, and there was no threat.
"At no time were any of the students at Morton East in any danger," Cicero Police Chief Jerry Chlada said in a statement. "But we don't take anything like this for granted and we did a thorough investigation before concluding the reports of someone with a weapon were not true."
The lockdown was lifted around 12:30 p.m., and students were dismissed for the day. School officials said Tuesday was a scheduled half day.
