Michael Jordan To Receive Medal Of Freedom
(CBS) Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom next week, joining 20 others who will be the last to receive the nation's highest civilian honor from President Barack Obama.
"The Presidential Medal of Freedom is not just our nation's highest civilian honor -- it's a tribute to the idea that all of us, no matter where we come from, have the opportunity to change this country for the better. From scientists, philanthropists, and public servants to activists, athletes and artists, these 21 individuals have helped push America forward, inspiring millions of people around the world along the way," Obama said in a statement on the White House website.
Jordan, a Hall of Famer, won six NBA titles, six NBA Finals MVPs and five NBA MVP awards in his career. He was also a 14-time All-Star, a 10-time scoring champion, a nine-time All-Defensive First Team selection, the 1988 Defensive Player of the Year and was Rookie of the Year in 1985.
Jordan joins Los Angeles Lakers star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, retired Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully and 18 others who will receive the Medal of Freedom from Obama on Nov. 22.
