Metra Train Strikes, Kills Person In Northwest Suburb

(STMW) -- Inbound and outbound Metra Union Pacific-Northwest Line trains were delayed Friday morning after a person was fatally struck by a train in northwest suburban Cary, officials said.

The person was struck by UP-Northwest Line Train 608 about 5:40 a.m. near 3 Oaks Road and the Cary Depot, according to Metra spokesman Michael Gillis.

The person was struck and killed, Gillis said. The age and gender of the person weren't available. Fire and police officials in Cary couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

Inbound and outbound trains north of Cary remain halted as of 8:52 a.m., according to Metra. The length of delays for Train 608 were unknown but expected to be extensive.

Train 638, which was scheduled to depart Crystal Lake at 9 a.m. and arrive in Chicago at 10:23 a.m., will originate from Cary Friday morning, according to Metra. It was scheduled to depart the Cary station at 9:08 a.m.

Metra will have "minimal inbound service" between Barrington and Chicago. Riders are urged to board inbound trains from the Barrington stop, and to check Metra's website for travel times on the UP-Northwest Line.
