Metra Takes Railroad Safety Program On The Road
(CBS) -- Metra went digital Thursday in its efforts to promote railroad safety.
Larry Green is Metra's Public Safety Coordinator and has done thousands of Operation Lifesaver presentations to schools and groups. Thursday, he was among the speakers to Tinley Park High School sophomores who are taking driver's education.
The railroad safety video will remain available on Metra's YouTube channel.
Metra says 29 people were killed in accidents involving Metra trains last year, which is about its yearly average, according to Public Safety Director Hillary Konczal.
Speakers stressed the importance of always being aware when you're around railroad tracks.
Metra police Lt. Tom Donagan told the Tinley Park students it takes a train the length of 18 football fields to stop.
"Our hope is your generation will grow up with the tools to stay safe around railroads," Metra CEO Don Orseno told the students.
