Metra North Central Service Running Again

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Trains on Metra's North Central Service that were halted because of a freight train derailment Tuesday will resume Wednesday morning.

A southbound Canadian National freight train was carrying plastic pellets from Wisconsin when a set of wheels on one of the cars derailed about 1 a.m. Tuesday, CN spokesman Patrick Waldron said.

The train derailed on a single-track portion of the line, forcing Metra to suspend all North Central Service trains until at least Wednesday morning, according to a service alert on Metra's website. North Central Service operates between Chicago and north suburban Antioch.

As of 11:30 a.m., the train had been uprighted and moved, and crews were working to repair damage to the track, Waldron said.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation, Waldron said. No one was hurt in the derailment, officials said.

North Central Service trains will resume Wednesday morning, but will operate more slowly between the Mundelein and Washington Street stations, causing delays of 10 to 15 minutes.
