Metra Electric line breaking ground on renovation at three stations

3 Metra Electric line stations to get renovations

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Metra riders on the South Side will soon see some major improvements.

State and local leaders gathered Thursday morning in Chatham today to break ground on one of three stations getting major renovations.

Metra will be upgrading the 79th Street (Chatham), 87th Street (Woodruff) and 103rd Street (Rosemoor) stations on the Metra Electric line.

Improvements include new entryways, new platforms, new stairs and headhouses, and better lighting and signage. The work also will make all three stations accessible to people with disabilities.

Each station will be closed for approximately seven months to complete the work.

The $33.9 million project was made possible thanks to funding from the state's Rebuild Illinois capital plan, as well as federal grants.
