Men Are Increasingly Choosing The Nursing Profession In Chicago

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, "The nursing profession remains overwhelmingly female, but the representation of men has increased as the demand for nurses has grown over the last several decades." Once you're able to disregard the stereotype that only females can partake in the nursing profession, the advantages of choosing this career path can transcend any notions of gender barriers.

Michael Klusmeyer, Charge Nurse at Satellite Healthcare Glenview, is a great example of how the most important factor in achieving a successful career in nursing isn't gender, but education. For others looking to pursue a career in the medical field, Klusmeyer offers some great advice on how to maintain a sustainable career in nursing.

How does your formal education relate to your current role?

"I began in the EMS system as a hospital-based paramedic. Later, I decided on LPN school, and then pursued my associate's in nursing. I have worked in an emergency room setting; and I have been ACLS certified, as well as TNCC, and PALS and CNN certified.  I have worked in dialysis since 1985 and am trained in Hemodialysis, PD, and CRRT. I have been a nurse manager, as well as a charge nurse, for two other dialysis providers."

How has your education attributed to your career success?

"I am fortunate to have trained and worked with reputable and knowledgeable nephrologists, Z. Twardowski,  R.Khanna,  K. Nolph, and J. VanStone. This experience allowed active participation in multiple research areas, which further helped my understanding of the complexity of renal disease, and the effects on other major organ systems. This research presented an opportunity to explore, write, publish and present findings in the area of buttonhole access techniques and other renal studies."

What advice can offer others going into nursing?

"Learn to laugh at yourself, and with others. Be a listener, to learn from patients and families. Keep your mind open and clear. There are multiple ways to get from point A to point B. Be open to new ideas, and other point of views. Learn to enjoy your time away from work to de-stress and relax."
