McCarthy's Firing No Surprise To Many Calling For His Ouster
(CBS) -- From the moment the Laquan McDonald video came out, protesters started calling for Supt. Garry McCarthy's firing.
CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker reports many of them aren't surprised by it and say they knew it was just a matter of time.
Lorenzo Davis, former police commander and former investigator with the Independent police Review Authority, was among the hundreds demonstrating outside City Hall Monday, demanding that Superintendent Garry McCarthy be fired.
"So many people in Chicago were upset by Laquan McDonald's execution that McCarthy had to go," Davis said.
Inside City Hall, black alderman had been equally vocal.
"At the end of the day we knew this was going to happen anyway," said Alderman Joe Moore. The Black Caucas had called for resignation of McCarthy."
Alderman Walter Burnett Jr., who supports the mayor, applauds the firing but doesn't blame McCarthy for all the problems.
"No matter who was in that position, they probably wouldn't have stopped Van Dyke from doing what he did," Burnett said. "I do commend the mayor for listening to the sentiments of the community."
While the firing of McCarthy seems to come as no surprise to those calling for his ouster, Davis, who spent 23 years on the force, says his departure sends a message
"It sends a message to the few bad police officers that you might not be able to get away with anything," Davis said.
Davis, like others who took to the streets, says protesters still have demands.
"I think more is needed," said Pastor Charles Dates. "I think the State's Attorney Anita Alvarez needs to be not only challenged but replaced. I think we need a federal, independent investigation into the death of Laquan McDonald.
Protesters are also demanding a federal investigation into the Chicago Police Department. Several groups are expected to be back outside the police headquarters later Tuesday evening.
