McCarthy Stresses Difference In Tactics Between Chicago, Ferguson Police
(CBS) -- As Michael Brown was laid to rest in Missouri, the Chicago Police superintendent said it's important to understand differences between policing styles in Chicago and Ferguson in Missouri, reports WBBM's John Cody.
Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said Ferguson tactics in dealing with crowds are exactly what Chicago Police are trying not to do.
"With flashing lights and tear gas, helmets and rifles on the front line in armored cars, so as far as the tactics go, we would do it differently here," McCarthy said.
McCarthy also said that in 2011 there were 80 incidents of police firing their weapons on duty. He said now, after extensive training, the number of police firing incidents is down to 45, year to date.
McCarthy says the independent police review board is investigating the shooting of two young men by police on Saturday. He said in both cases, police recovered guns from active shooters at the scene.
