CHICAGO (STMW) -- A pedestrian was fatally struck by a Metra Union Pacific Northwest train Tuesday evening in Des Plaines.
The pedestrian was struck about 5:10 at the Des Plaines Train Depot at 1501 E. Miner St., according to a Metra spokesman and police. Outbound train No. 629 had been scheduled to arrive at Crystal Lake at 5:56 p.m.
Witnesses said the pedestrian, a man in his 40's, stepped off the train platform in front of the moving train as it approached the station, police said.
He was found by authorities under a stopped train on track #1 and pronounced dead at the scene at 5:46 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.
His name was not released Tuesday night pending family notification.
The case remained under investigation by Des Plaines police, Metra and the Union Pacific Railroad to ensure depot platform safety features were working properly at the time of the incident.
