Man dead in police shooting in Chicago's northwest suburbs

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, Ill. (CBS) -- Police shot and killed a man in northwest suburban Elk Grove Village late Friday afternoon after they say he confronted officers with a knife.

As CBS 2's Marybel González reported, the scene at Fern Drive and Ridge Avenue remained very active late Friday night – with flares blocking the street, and yellow crime scene tape cordoning part of it off.

It all happened in an otherwise quiet neighborhood.

"Nothing like this at all has ever, you know, happened in this area," said Barb Labellarte.

At 4:27 p.m., Elk Grove Village police were called to a residence in the 200 block of Fern Drive for a report of a man with a knife, according to Elk Grove Village police Deputy Chief Christopher Torres.

Multiple officers were on the scene when the man walked out of a house with a knife in hand, according to Torres. He confronted officers away from the home in a nearby yard, Torres said.

During the confrontation, police shot the man. Initial reports said police shot him at least four times in the chest.

The man, later identified as 24-year-old Jack A. Murray by the Medical Examiner's Office, was pronounced dead at an area hospital, Torres said.

Three officers were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Late Friday, Elk Grove Village police were not disclosing the identity of the man – and would not tell us if he lived in the home. But they did say they have responded to the residence in the past.

It was also unclear what exactly led up to the police shooting the man.

"I don't have additional information at this time specifically in regards to that confrontation," Torres said. "That's part of the investigation that we're going to look into."

Residents said the large police presence has left them shocked – and with many questions.

"What happened?" Labellarte said. "You know, is it somebody who lives in the neighborhood? Is it something we should be concerned about?"

Elk Grove Village police late Friday were conducting a criminal investigation. The Major Case Assistance Team – a regional task force – was also investigating, Torres said.

Torres said there was no danger to the public.
