Man Shocked By Downed Power Lines

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man in his 60s was in critical condition Tuesday morning after being shocked by a downed power line.

CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli reports a dump truck knocked down power lines when it raised its bed and ripped down part of a utility pole near the intersection of King Drive and 79th Street around 4:30 p.m. Monday.

The downed power lines came in contact with an SUV parked in the alley. When a man believed to be in his 60s touched the SUV, he suffered a severe electric shock. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was listed in critical condition Tuesday morning.

More than 1,200 homes and businesses were without power for about four hours because of the downed power lines.

ComEd crews have shut down the area around 79th and King as they work to replace the downed utility pole. A library near the downed utility pole was still without power Tuesday morning, as were the traffic lights at 79th and King.

Police said no traffic tickets were issued to the truck driver.
