Man Rescues Boy, 3, From SUV That Crashed Into Englewood Building
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Good Samaritan rescued a 3-year-old boy from an SUV just before it burst into flames after crashing into a building in Englewood.
The 3-year-old boy was riding in a stolen SUV that crashed into a vacant building in the 2000 block of West 59th Street shortly before midnight Sunday night.
Police said the driver fled the scene after the crash, leaving the boy to fend for himself inside the vehicle.
A witnessed happened to check the interior of the SUV and spotted the boy trapped inside. He pulled the boy out of the vehicle after determining he was not breathing.
The SUV caught fire just after the man pulled the boy out.
Moments later, a Chicago Police sergeant arrived on the scene to help. He performed CPR on the child and revived him.
"The sergeant involved in that scenario did a great job. Actually probably saved that child's life," said Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy.
The boy was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
Officers have since located the child's mother, and determined the SUV had been stolen. Police said she knows the person who took the SUV, but no one was in custody as of Monday morning.
Chicago Police say if he's found, the driver who abandoned the child could face several charges including leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury.
