Man Killed In Gary Crash

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 48-year-old man died in a Gary, Ind. crash late Tuesday.

The Lake County coroner's office was dispatched just before 10 p.m. to Methodist Hospital Northlake to pronounce dead Ronald L. Mayes, who lived in the 600 block of Grant Street in Gary, Ind., the coroner's office said in a statement.

Mayes suffered blunt force trauma in a motor vehicle accident near 39th and Massachusetts avenues in Gary, the coroner's office said. A Gary police spokesman could not be reached early Wednesday for comment.

Rene'e Gibbs, who was standing at the scene late Tuesday, told a reporter that her brother and godson were struck in the crash by a drunk driver, who she also knows.

"We was sitting out here having a nice time. I went in the house for a few minutes," Gibbs said. "The gentleman who came to visit us over here, he was intoxicated, got in the car and he hit…five cars over here."

Gibbs said all the cars that the driver hit were parked.

Through tears she said her brother — who she referred to as Ron — was struck and was unresponsive after the crash.

Dave Wegner, who lives near the scene of the accident, said he heard the impact of the crash.

"I walked outside, and the car is up in the grass over there," Wegner said. "It hit the van and careened off the van, hit a car on the other side of the street, went back across the street and hit the van again."

He said there were at least 20 police officers who responded to the scene and that at least two people were taken away by an ambulance.
