Man Drives Away From Court On Suspended License, Gets Caught Speeding
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 30-year-old man with suspended license was charged with speeding in a school zone just after leaving court for a similar charge on Friday in southwest suburban Riverside.
At 3:30 p.m., an officer clocked a 2003 Dodge van driving 16 miles over the 20 mph school zone speed limit, according to a statement from Riverside police. The van was driving southbound on Woodside Road near Hauser Central Elementary School, which had just dismissed students for the day.
When the officer stopped the van a block later, the driver, Jose F. Vazquez, told him that he did not have a valid license and handed him a subpoena showing he had just come from court, police said.
After running a check, the officer found his license was suspended and that Vazquez had been charged at least six times before for driving with a suspended or revoked license, according to police.
Vazquez, of the 4300 block of South Harlem Avenue in Stickney, was charged with speeding in a school zone while children were present and driving with a suspended license, police said. His vehicle was towed and impounded.
"Mr. Vazquez knew his license was suspended along with the fact that he had been arrested on numerous prior occasions," Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel said in the statement. "However, this did not deter him from simply getting in his car again after his court date and driving. Riverside police have impounded the vehicle and will attempt to seize it under the civil forfeiture law in Illinois."
