Man Dies In Gresham Crash After Fleeing Police

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man fleeing police on the South Side died after his vehicle was involved in a series of crashes Sunday night, police said.

About 10:30 p.m., Chicago Police officers saw an SUV with the man and two other males inside speeding and pulled it over in the 6700 block of South Ashland Avenue, police said.

During the stop, the man--described only as an adult--got back in the vehicle and drove off south on Ashland, and officers followed, police said. The vehicle blew a stop light in the 7600 block of South Ashland Avenue and hit a car heading westbound on 76th Street in the Gresham neighborhood, police said.

His vehicle then struck a fire hydrant and a light pole before coming to a stop, police said.

The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he later died, police said. The Cook County medical examiner's could not confirm the death early Monday.

A woman and a child in the car struck on 76th were taken to Holy Cross Hospital with minor injuries, police said.
