Man Dies Before Being Released From Cook County Jail

CHICAGO (STMW) -- An Elmwood Park man died Wednesday night while he was in the process of being released from Cook County Jail.

Daniel J. Paredes, 49, had been in custody at the jail since April 6 for a drug possession charge, said Cook County Sheriff's office spokesman Benjamin Breit. His family had recently posted a $2,000 bond, and on Wednesday, he was in the process of being discharged, Breit said.

Paredes was in a holding cell in the discharge area, at 2600 S. California Ave., when sheriff's officers saw him slump over and become unresponsive, Breit said.

Medical staff attended to him before ambulances arrived to take him to Saint Anthony Hospital, authorities said. Paredes, of the 7800 block of West Belmont Avenue in Elmwood Park, was pronounced dead there at 10:40 p.m., the medical examiner's office said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

No foul play is suspected in the death, Breit said.
