(STMW) -- A man was critically wounded in a shooting in north suburban Evanston Tuesday evening, prompting officials to lock down a nearby high school.

About 5:20 p.m., a 45-year-old man and another person were in the rear of a home in the 1900 block of Emerson when four males walked up and opened fire before running off, according to a statement from Evanston police.

The man was shot once in the head and was taken to NorthShore Evanston Hospital in critical condition, police said.

Nearby Evanston Township High School was locked down as a precaution, police said. No students were injured or involved.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call police at (847) 866-5000.
