Man Charged With Whipping Boy With Electric Cord
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 13-year-old boy who failed to bring a parent to a parent-teacher conference at his school last May was whipped with an electric cord by an "angry" family member, prosecutors alleged in court Sunday.
The relative, Mario J. Boone, was charged with aggravated domestic battery. Boone, 38, appeared in Cook County Court on Sunday, and Judge Peggy Chiampas set his bail at $10,000, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
On May 27, the boy — who lived with Boone at the time — was brought home from school for failing to bring a parent to the conference, Assistant State's Attorney Andres Almendarez said.
Boone ordered the boy to strip off his clothes and sent him to the basement of the home in the 11700 block of Eggleston in West Pullman. Boone entered the basement, punched the boy in the face and whipped him with a 5-foot-long extension cord for about 10 minutes, prosecutors said. Then he ordered the boy to clean the kitchen.
Then next two days, Boone did not allow the boy to go to school because he had visible injuries, prosecutors said. Eventually, the boy was taken to his grandmother's house and she called the boy's mother.
The boy was taken to South Shore Hospital, where he was treated for over 50 welts and cuts to his face, back, legs and arms, prosecutors said.
