Man Charged With Stealing From Church Donation Baskets

A southwest suburban man is facing felony charges for stealing money from donation baskets in at least three churches.

David A. Kost, 28, of Orland Park, was charged with two felony counts of theft from a place of worship, and one count of misdemeanor theft, according to Orland Park police.

Police set up surveillance Tuesday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church at 15050 Wolf Rd. in Orland Park after they were notified by the Cook County Sheriff's office of thefts from church donation baskets in the area, a statement from police said.

A man, later identified as Kost, was stopped after he was seen entering and leaving the church about 6:30 p.m., police said. He admitted taking $14 from the donation basket, and was arrested.

Police said Kost also admitted to similar thefts at other churches, and was charged with robbing the St. Frances of Assisi, St. Michael Catholic Church, and Our Lady of the Woods Catholic Church, all in Orland Park.

Kost, of the 15000 block of Park Station Boulevard in Orland Park, was to appear for a bond hearing Wednesday in Bridgeview.
