Man Charged With Stabbing, Robbing Man Meeting Online Date In Elgin

(STMW) -- An Elgin man has been charged with robbing and stabbing a man who thought he was meeting someone he met on an online dating service last month in the northwest suburb.

Andrew Chapman, 27, is charged with felony counts of armed robbery, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and theft for the Nov. 19 attack, according to a statement from Elgin police.

The victim, a 37-year-old man, had used an online dating service to arrange a meeting with someone about 1:30 a.m. in an apartment complex parking lot in the 1200 block of Fleetwood Drive, police said. When he arrived, Chapman and other suspects stabbed and robbed him.

The victim suffered multiple stab wounds to his upper torso and was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Chapman, of the 1100 block of Spruce Lane in Elgin, was arrested and charged Friday after detectives identified him as a suspect, police said.

His bond was set at $100,000 at a hearing Saturday morning, according to the Kane County sheriff's office.
