Man Charged With Shooting Off-Duty Cop And Her Daughter

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 28-year-old man has been charged with shooting an off-duty Chicago police officer and her daughter in the South Shore neighborhood, after a domestic dispute at the officer's home.

Anthony Gates, of Riverdale, has been charged with two counts each of attempted murder and aggravated battery.

Gates allegedly shot his girlfriend and her 49-year-old mother, off-duty Chicago police officer Samella Ramirez, after a domestic dispute inside Ramirez's home in the 2200 block of East 68th Street around 10 p.m. Tuesday.

He then allegedly fled the home with the 2-year-old son he had with his girlfriend. Police found the toddler safe with Gates on the Near North Side,

Police said the officer, a highly-decorated 24-year veteran of the force, was in critical but stable condition Thursday morning at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. She had been shot in the face, neck, and arms. Her daughter was shot in the thigh, and was in stable condition at Northwestern.

Police have not said why the domestic dispute escalated to the point Gates shot his girlfriend and her mother.

Gates was due in bond court Thursday afternoon.
