Habitual Offender Charged With Fatal Shooting Near Millennium Park

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A purported gang member with a long history of criminal arrests has been charged with murder in a fatal shooting near Millennium Park over the weekend.

Police say suspect 32-year-old Paul Pagan racked up 39 arrests and he was on their "strategic subject list." He was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon just last year and faced a warrant for another assault since then.

He was free Saturday, authorities say, to shoot a stranger over a petty argument.

Pagan was riding his bike and came upon two groups of people arguing over religion on Michigan Avenue around 7:30 p.m. He jumped in, and within moments, Pagan had allegedly shot Peter Fabbri in the head.

Pagan fled the scene, police say, but officers were able to catch him.

Fabbri was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He was taken off life support Sunday afternoon.

Fabbri's brother, Bruno, said Fabbri was leaving a wine tasting event in the Loop with his girlfriend and sister Saturday night, when the argument and shooting occurred.

"He didn't deserve this," Bruno said.

Fabbri was a father of two and the oldest of six siblings. He repaired homes with his brother Bruno.

"Everybody loses at this point," Bruno Fabbri said.

Fabbri's family was collecting funeral funds through a Go Fund Me account to say a proper goodbye.
