Man Charged With DUI For Crash That Killed Pregnant Woman In North Lawndale
(STMW) --Bond was set at $750,000 Sunday for a man charged with DUI for a hit-and-run crash that killed a pregnant woman and caused the delivery of her premature baby boy Thursday night in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side.
Silvestre Garcia, 22, faces one count of aggravated DUI causing death and one count of leaving the scene of an accident causing death, both felonies, according to Chicago Police.
About 9:50 p.m., 26-year-old Karla Y. Leanos was crossing the street in the 4200 block of West Ogden when she was struck by a silver Chrysler, authorities said.
Leanos, of the 3000 block of South Keeler, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 10:25 p.m., the Cook County medical examiner's office said. An autopsy ruled her death an accident.
After Leanos was struck, emergency personnel delivered a baby boy, whose condition had stabilized by Friday morning, authorities said.
Garcia, of the 2700 block of South Harding, also was charged with two misdemeanor counts of DUI and cited for a defective windshield and transportation or possession of an alcoholic liquor in a motor vehicle.
A judge on ordered him held on a $750,000 bond at a hearing Sunday, according to the Cook County sheriff's office. He is due back in court Monday.
