Man Charged With Attacking Police Officer At Metra Station

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A Chicago man was charged with attempted first-degree murder Monday in connection with an attack on a uniformed Norfolk Southern police officer at a South Side Metra station Sunday.

Nathan Haywood, 24, of the 8100 block of South Spaulding Avenue, is accused of choking and beating a 39-year-old Norfolk Southern officer. The officer had spotted him trespassing on the railroad tracks at the Wrightwood Metra station at 10:24 p.m. Sunday near 79th Street and Kedzie Avenue, police said.

During the struggle, the officer was able to radio for assistance, authorities said. Officers were on scene within minutes and Haywood was taken into custody.

When officers arrived, Haywood was still on top of the officer, attacking him, a police source said.

The officer was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with injuries that weren't life-threatening, police said. He is expected to recover.

Haywood also was charged with one count of felony aggravated battery against a police officer; felony aggravated battery that caused great bodily harm; resisting an officer; felony disarming of an officer, and criminal trespass to land.

In 2008, Haywood was charged with armed robbery with a firearm; aggravated unlawful restraint; and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, among other charges, according to court records. Haywood pleaded guilty to those charges and was sentenced to six years to the Illinois Department of Corrections, according to records.

Haywood was expected to appear in bond court on Tuesday.
