Man Charged In Harvey Crash That Killed Two Teens
CHICAGO (STMW) -- An 18-year-old Riverdale man has been charged with reckless homicide for the deaths of two teenagers killed when a stolen vehicle he was driving crashed in south suburban Harvey in July.
Kevin Dixon, 18, was driving a four-door 2000 Saturn westbound on 147th Street approaching Clinton about 1:56 a.m. on July 27 when he lost control and the car struck a utility pole, according to Harvey spokesman Sean Howard.
Michael Johnson, 16; and Tashanda Reed, 17, both of Riverdale, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to Harvey officials and the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Autopsies found both died of multiple injuries from an automobile striking a fixed object and their deaths were ruled accidents, according to the medical examiner's office.
Dixon and another teen were treated at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn after the crash, authorities said.
Investigators determined Dixon had been driving at more than 75 mph in a 45 mph speed zone when the crash occurred, Howard said.
The car had been reported stolen in Dolton two days before the crash, according to Howard.
An arrest warrant for Dixon was issued Sept. 10, and he was arrested in Riverdale on Wednesday, Howard said.
He is charged with two counts of reckless homicide and one count of possession of a stolen vehicle, Howard said. He was expected to appear in bond court Friday in Markham.
