Man Charged In Connection With Englewood Mass Shooting
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago Police on Saturday said they arrested a man in a shooting that wounded 13 people in Englewood a few days before Christmas.
Keilon Jones was charged with one felony count of aggravated battery with a firearm, and one felony count of attempted murder, in the shooting on Dec. 22 at 57th and May streets.
Bond was denied for Jones on Saturday in Central Bond Court (Br. 1), given the threat that a judge ruled he poses to the community, CBS 2's Marissa Parra reported.
Police and prosecutors have said 13 people were wounded early that Sunday morning, when at least two people started "shooting randomly" around 12:30 a.m.
The shooting happened at a memorial party for 22-year-old Lonell Irvin, who was shot and killed when he tried to carjack a 41-year-old man in April.
In court, prosecutors from the Cook County State's Attorney's office said all the guests who attended the party came through a rear kitchen door – and all the men who attended were patted down upon entry.
Jones was patted down too, but did not have a gun with him at that point, prosecutors said.
When the host of the party was in the living room, Jones was in the hallway toward the living-dining room, prosecutors said. While there, Jones fired a gun, and two men standing near the front door shot back, prosecutors said.
The host saw Jones go on shooting as he ran toward the kitchen door and fled, prosecutors said.
Surveillance video showed several people leaving the home after the shooting. Jones was seen walking toward the street from a gangway wearing a distinct red sweat shirt and light-colored camouflage pants that he had arrived in, prosecutors said.
Jones was then seen briefly walking north on May Street, and as people left the house, Jones fired eight more times and struck a 20-year-old man in the thigh and buttocks, police said.
Jones then fled north on May Street toward 56th Street. Surveillance cameras then captured Jones driving north on May Street in a 2012 Mazda 6 that was registered to his girlfriend, prosecutors said.
The vehicle slowed as it approached 57th and May streets, and Jones could be seen moving around inside the vehicle and pointing a gun at the man he had shot earlier, prosecutors said. At that point, the man Jones is accused of shooting fired about nine shots at Jones' car, prosecutors said.
Jones drove to St. Bernard Hospital and went to the emergency room, while the man he is accused of shooting found his own way to the University of Chicago Medical Center, police said.
Jones was arrested on Jan. 16 in Riverdale. Jones has no job and is the father of a 3-year-old, his assistant public defender said in court.
Jones is due back in court on Thursday, Jan. 23.
Another man was arrested while fleeing the scene of the shooting, but he claimed he was not involved.
Marciano White, 37, told police he hid in a closet as the shots rang out, and found a revolver on the stairs as he was leaving.
White was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and being an armed habitual criminal. He was not charged in the shooting itself.
