Man arrested after attacking woman with knife at Chicago area Portillo's, police say
CHICAGO (CBS) — A man was arrested after police said he attacked a woman with two knives during a domestic dispute inside a Portillo's in Elmhurst early Wednesday morning and then barricaded himself inside the restaurant.
Police said, around 5:30 a.m., officers responded to the Portillo's at 155 S. IL Route 83 after receiving a 911 call about a domestic incident involving a man with a knife.
When officers arrived, they learned a 32-year-old man was working for a subcontracted cleaning crew alongside two women when he attacked one of the women with two large knives. Police said the man had a relationship with the woman but did not elaborate.
The two women escaped and flag down a passing driver, who called 911. The woman who had been attacked suffered a minor injury, according to police.
In the meantime, the suspect barricaded himself inside the restaurant. After he did not answer phone calls and other communication attempts from police, officers went into the restaurant around 8:30 a.m. and found him lying inside with a self-inflicted injury.
The man was arrested and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Police said he is expected to face charges.
The Elmhurst Shopping Center, where Portillo's is located, was closed while police responded to the incident but reopened around 9:30 a.m. The restaurant remained closed Wednesday morning while police processed the scene for evidence.
