The suspect entered through the back doors of the Fifth Third Bank branch at 6760 Broadway in Merrillville, Ind., about 5:30 p.m., according to a statement from the FBI.

The man, armed with a black handgun, ordered bank employees to the floor and stole an undisclosed amount of money before running out, according to the statement.

He is described as a 6-foot, 170-pound black man with a clean-shaven face. He was wearing a black jacket with light gray shoulders and a hood; blue jeans and tan work/military style boots.

The FBI said the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous.

The robbery is the first in the Chicago area since Jan. 24, according to the FBI. So far, there have been 19 bank robberies in 2015.
