Man dies after Brighton Park apartment fire

CHICAGO (CBS) — A man is dead after an apartment fire Thursday morning in the city's Brighton Park neighborhood.

Chicago police said just after 4 a.m., the victim, believed to be in his 60s, was found unresponsive in a fire at the apartment building in the 4500 block of South Francisco Avenue.

He was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he died.

No other injuries were reported, but four people were displaced as a result of the fire.

Resident Samuel Garcia said the fire started in the basement of the apartment. He said the man who died in the fire was the owner of the building.

"I woke up, and I saw the smoke, and I called the police, and that's it," he said.

Garcia and other people were seen taking bags of their belongings from the building.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Hours after the fatal fire, the Chicago Fire Department handed out smoke detectors and safety reading materials to residents in the area.

"Check batteries in smoke detectors; keep space heaters away from furniture; be safe," CFD posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.
