Malaysian Group: Chicagoan Might Have Been On Plane That Crashed In Ukraine
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The founder of the Malaysian Club of Chicago said he's getting word of a Chicagoan who might have been on board the Malaysia Airlines jetliner that crashed in Ukraine on Thursday.
Dr. Kim Tee said he's heard from a Chicago woman who believes her friend from Chicago was on Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 when the Boeing 777 went down.
"She's still in shock and she doesn't talk too much. And when you're in shock you don't have your mental status stable. So you prefer not to talk until you calm down for a little while," he said.
Tee said the woman's friend is believed to have been on the way to Kuala Lumpur to celebrate the Islamic holiday of Eid, marking the end of Ramadan near the end of this month.
Officials have yet to confirm the passenger list, although Reuters has reported 23 Americans were on the flight. President Barack Obama said the federal government is still working to determine if any Americans were on the plane.
Tee said Malaysians are reeling with the news of the crash - four months after the disappearance of Malaysia Air Flight 370 over the Pacific Ocean.
