Madigan: Check Sex Offender Registry Before Trick-Or-Treating

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is reminding parents to check the state's sex offender registry ahead of Halloween trick-or-treating.

As of October 2016, there were more than 29,300 registered sex offenders listed on the registry, the Madigan's office said.

"It's horrifying how many known sex offenders there are; they live in every community of Illinois," Madigan said. "So I encourage parents, grandparents and caregivers to check the Illinois online sex offender registry before going out with their little ghosts and goblins this Halloween to ensure fun and safe trick or treating."

Sex offenders who committed a crime against a child are prohibited from giving out candy or other items to children on Halloween, Madigan said. The registry, maintained by Illinois State Police, can be found on the Illinois State Police website.
