Loyola women's volleyball team beats BYU for first ever NCAA Tournament win
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (CBS) -- The Loyola women's volleyball team made some history Thursday in West Lafayette, Indiana.
The Atlantic-10 champs upset No. 5-seeded BYU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament with a dominating 3-0 sweep.
Marta Cvitkovic led Loyola with 13 kills, four digs, and a block while hitting .444. Esma Ajanovic had 10 kills, and Bree Borum had her third straight double-double of the season with 32 assists and 10 digs.
In Set One, Ajanovic had two early kills—bringing the Ramblers to a score of 5-3. BYU came back with a 3-0 run by Brielle Kemavor, but Loyola went on to tie the game three times and use a 5-0 run to take a three-point advantage, a Loyola recap noted.
BYU got three consecutive kills to get with three before the set ended, but the Ramblers won the set 25-20.
Ajanovic also got the first kill in Set Two—and the Ramblers kept ahead with an ace by Olivia Lovett and two back-to-back kills by Avary DeBlieck. Loyola kept it up for a final score of 25-21, a recap noted.
In Set Three, Loyola took a 5-1 lead out of the first serve, with kills by DeBlieck and Ajanovic during the run. BYU came back to get within a point with the score at 11-10, but Loyola scored the next 11 points, Lyoola said.
Ajanovic then began a 4-0 run with kills from Borum and Lovett, and an ace from Ajanovic. Cvitkovic had another kill on one of the last four points by Loyola, and the Ramblers won 25-17., Loyola said.
The Ramblers advance to the second-round match on Friday at 5 p.m. to play Purdue.
