CHICAGO (CBS) -- Four workers were taken to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon for carbon monoxide exposure, after using gas-powered power washers inside an apartment building in Logan Square.

Chicago Fire Department officials called in a hazardous materials response at a 5-story apartment building at 3125 W. Fullerton Av., due to carbon monoxide levels of more than 500 parts per million. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, any level above 50 parts per million can be dangerous to health.

Officials said the source of the carbon monoxide was power washers being used inside the building. Four workers were taken to the hospital in serious to critical condition.

The building was evacuated while emergency crews worked to clear the air inside before people were allowed to safely return inside.
