Listen: Home Run Calls From 'The Sandberg Game'
(CBS) – Monday marks the 30th anniversary of what has been dubbed "The Sandberg Game" for the late-inning heroics of Cubs second baseman and Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg.
On June 23, 1984, during a national telecast, the Cubs were trailing 9-8 against the rival St. Louis Cardinals when Sandberg stepped up to the plate to face star closer Bruce Sutter.
Sandberg, who would go on to win the National League MVP that year, hit a home run to left field to tie the game at 9-9.
The Cardinals responded with two runs in the 10th inning to take an 11-9 lead. With one man on base and Sutter still on the mound for the Cardinals, Sandberg hit another game-tying homer in the bottom of the 10th.
The Cubs would go on to win the game 12-11 the 11th inning. Despite his game-saving home runs, Sandberg wasn't named NBC's player of the game. The honor was awarded to the Cardinals' Willie McGee, who hit for the cycle, prior to Sandberg hitting his first home run.
