Lincoln Park mother recalls terrifying moments when she was carjacked with her kids in the vehicle

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A mom and dad were carjacked and pulled from their vehicle steps from the Lincoln Park Zoo this week.

On Thursday night, we heard from that terrified mom, who feared the worst the night before as her kids were left in the hands of carjackers.

"I honestly did think I would never see them again," said Lilibeth Garcia.

Garcia said she was holding her family close Thursday night. Her daughter Jianna, 1, and Amir, 5, are safe at home.

"How do you prevent this?" Garcia said. "You know, how do you get justice out of this?"

Lilibeth Garcia and her husband, Carlos, deliver Amazon Flex packages for extra money. On Wednesday night – after a dropoff at an apartment on Lincoln Park West near Dickens Avenue in Lincoln Park – they were ambushed.

A car pulled up to the driver' side of their sport-utility vehicle, and the carjackers threw Carlos onto the street and took off.

"I saw my husband being dragged with the car," Garcia said.

The carjackers drove south on Lincoln Park West with the two kids still in the back seat. The journey only took minutes before officers found the car stopped less than a block away – on Stockton Drive near Dickens Drive.

On the scene, Carlos was seen on video hugging his daughter tightly. Lilibeth said she immediately checked on her son.

"I asked like, 'Are you OK?'" she said. "He's like, 'Mommy, I'm scared.' That's all he told me."

These parents say they are going to think twice now about bringing their kids along for deliveries in the future. It was a tough lesson learned in a few terrifying moments.

Meanwhile, Lilibeth Garcia is feeling blessed to have her family back together.

"I was grateful," she said. "That's the main, main priority, that I was really, really grateful to see my kids."

The carjackers bailed Wednesday night and were not in custody a night later.
