Bullet Strikes Girl, 6, Her Uncle Fatally Shot

(CBS) -- A 6-year-old girl was injured Thursday in a South Side shooting that left a 22-year-old man dead.

The incident occurred near 68th and Calumet. The girl received a graze wound to the ear, while the man was shot in the chest, Chicago Police News Affairs said. The man, a documented gang member, was later pronounced dead.

The child was taken to Comer Children's Hospital. Family members identified the young victim as Zariah Muhammad. The man who died was identified as her uncle.

Witnesses say children were playing outside when a man began shooting and fled in a car.

"I saw the kid laid out on the grass and the police pulled up and everything and I see the guy. He was kind of slowly breathing like he wasn't going to make it," said neighborhood resident Brian Crawford.

Another neighbor, Willie Bruessard, says gunfire is common in the neighborhood.

"That's always around here man. People get shot like [it's] nothing," Bruessard said.
